On May 4, 2014, we had the honor of celebrating the confirmation of 65 students! It was truly amazing to see so many spiritually mature young people excited to serve and devote their lives to Christ. Throughout their Decision for Christ journey these students have be supported both at home and at Hamilton Mill UMC by so many dedicated parents and leaders. Raising children of faith in a church “where people matter,” starts at a young age. In fact, a few of the students that were confirmed yesterday actually started their faith journey right here in our HMUMC preschool. So just for a little fun, let’s take a look at the Preschool to Confirmation journey with a Q&A from both our current preschool students and the Confirmands that started their journey in our loving HMUMC Preschool classrooms.

2014 HMUMC Preschoolers

Our HMUMC Preschool Director, Jennifer Markham sat down with a few of our current preschoolers and talked with them about confirmation. Jennifer explained that it was like their chapel class, only much longer and they will take the class when they are around twelve years old. She then asked them the following question…

Do you want to love Jesus with all of your heart forever and ever? Why?

2014 Confirmands that Attended HMUMC Preschool

Now, add eight or so years of  Sunday school, a year-long confirmation class, combine this with being surrounded by loving parents, dedicated small group leaders and a congregation that is dedicated to making sure that all children know the God who loves them, and let’s take a look at what the 2014 Confirmands that attended our HMUMC Preschool had to say.

How has Jesus changed your life this year? How do you plan on continuing to grow in your faith?

“I have learned a lot about more about Jesus this year and felt much closer to God. I also felt more comfortable when I had a rough day knowing that Jesus was there to help me through. I plan to be in youth group at this church and go as much as I can to the activities and retreats. I also want to go to worship services at the Shed, and be a youth volunteer at VBS and the pantry.”

..“Jesus helps me to see how corrupted our world is.  He makes me want to make good choices.  I want to read the Bible more so I can keep understanding it more. I also want to help others with missions.”

– Abbie Herrin

“I have learned more about how to worship him this year especially during the middle on Wednesday nights which I really enjoy. I will continue to read the bible and learn more about Jesus’ life.”

jason confirmation 2014-new..“Jesus has changed my life in many ways in the pst year. First off, confirmation has done a big part of that. I have felt Jesus much more this year, because I have been going to the Shed. It has helped because it’s fun and I feel Jesus much more. He has helped me be nicer and guided me through school. Without him, it would’ve been very rough. I will continue my faith journey by going to the Shed and going to most retreats. I will keep on being nice and be kind to everyone (even if I don’t like them). I will pray more.”

….“Jesus has worked in my life this year. I have spent more time studying the bible and more time praying. He answered my parents prayers to allow them to send me to Hebron Christian Academy for middle school. I have made so many friends and met so many amazing people. Being surrounded by my Christian friends and leaders and teachers at church and at school has changed me.  I have learned many things I didn’t know about in my confirmation class at church. I have grown spiritually. I have loved my small group. It has been a great year and I can’t wait for the next few! I plan on continuing to grow in faith by attending Sunday school, small group and being involved in The Middle at church. My Wed. night small group is awesome! I also plan on really listening in my bible class at school so I can learn more about God’s plan. I am surrounded by Christians everyday and they help me stay close to God and keep growing in my faith. “

..“Coming to my church during my elementary school years consisted of getting up Sunday after Sunday and being forced by my parents to come to church. I’d say I didn’t understand the whole idea and they just replied, “Well that’s why you’re going; to learn.” It wasn’t until about 4th grade that a typical Sunday at Sunday school, that I felt God speaking to me. He told me to go home, read the bible and copy the verses that make me feel good. Even though I know it was God speaking to me, I still doubted his presence even after that. I was acting as if I had a little door to the entrance of my heart and I would let everything I wanted in, but then when God came knocking, I would put a padlock on the door. I thought to myself, “If people can’t see him than how do they know he is real and working in their lives? How do we know that the bible isn’t fiction?” I finally came to understand my 6th grade year,(this year), that the voices I hear guiding me in the right direction can not be and is not the voice of my own conscience. The voice is deep, soothing, and calm. His voice. It’s like he’s not worried that I won’t listen and start going in the right direction, because any path I go on he can take the wheel and change my direction to put on the right path. I used to say,”Ya, I know who God is.” But that wasn’t true. Now that I actually know him and feel his presence within everyday life I can say,”I know God, and I’m not ashamed to say I love him.”

“I DEFINETLY plan on continuing on with my belief in God for the rest I my life, not only on Earth but in Heaven with God himself. I want to grow up and people to say,”Oh ya, I know Ava Hager, she is just such a loyal person; holding onto her beliefs of God even when most people wouldn’t expect them to even be present.” I don’t want them to say,”Oh, Ava Hager? She was just so doubtful in her relationship with God it is as if it is non-existent.” I hope to be a dancer in a professional company when I grow up, and perform for my only audience member, God. As well as pursuing my dance career I also hope to pursue a career in traveling to spread the word of God and go on mission trips to places where He just isn’t present; where things just aren’t good. I used to not understand this whole thing, but now that I do, I don’t plan on stopping here.”

I was so happy to see several of my preschool students being confirmed this past Sunday. I struggled at the 11:00 service as to which side to take communion on because both students serving communion had been in my 3 year old classroom 8 years ago. It is awesome to see them continue in their spiritual walk here at HMUMC. Praises to our youth leaders and the parents who guide each and every week.

It was a blessing to see so many of our previous preschool students being confirmed last Sunday. I was in a dilema as to which side to take communion on because both boys serving had been in my 3 yr old class 8 years ago. It is a joy to see them continuing their spirital walk here at HMUMC. Praises to our youth leaders and their parents for guiding them each week as they grow in their faith.
