Day one in Guatemala!

Categories: High School,Students

Today’s post is by David Benson–the Director of Student Ministries

Yesterday was our first full day here in Guatemala and it has definitely been exciting. We started the day off with an incredible breakfast and I have to say that the Guatemala coffee is on “Fleek” or amazing!

After the mornings electric heat powered shower and some time reading in Mark in the Bible, we loaded up the bus and headed to San Juan La Laguna. When we arrived we split into two teams; one team to work with the Abuelitas, and the other to move dirt. (I’ll explain in a minute)

Team one spent the morning dancing with the Abuelitas and enjoyed trying to communicate with the older folks who mostly spoke in a Mayan dialect. We had a translator, which was extremely helpful, however the language barrier was definitely a factor. Smiles were the key for the morning.

Team two spent the morning tiring rebar and filling a giant gully next to the building with dirt. They probably shoveled and bucketed dirt close to a thousand times!

The morning definitely left us hungry for a great lunch packed together by the wonderful Impacto staff–all of which have gone out of there way to make us feel welcomed. During the afternoon team two played with kids at the Happy Tummies facility we helped build last year and team one moved dirt and helped move a cut down tree. The Guatemalan children were truly a blessing to be with. We played catch, soccer, tag and even “hide-and-go” seek in a giant cardboard box. The smiles kept coming.

We left San Juan La Laguna around 5pm and headed back for showers and dinner in the city next door where our lodging is located–San Pedro La Laguna. The sunset was beautiful and we even had time to skip rocks on the lake shore.

Our first day ended with a carb filled dinner of spaghetti and bread and an incredible salad and cookies. The power went out around 8pm so worship and devotion was all by candlelight. Internet here is spotty so if the updates aren’t as often as you’d like, we’re sorry! Even so, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night! Everyone shared there praises and thoughts on the day and is in good spirits.

I was so proud of the way our students worked and helped out. The smiles were contagious and made the language barrier go away. We made quite a few new friends on Day 1 and are ready for another awesome day today.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers! Much love HMUMC!
