Another day of fun!

Categories: High School,Students

Today’s post is by Sarah Crawford. It is her second time on the trip.

This morning (Wednesday) the team woke up to the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen! We then had pancakes the size of your face (no joke). We ate and had fellowship for a while then it was off to work!

The whole team got on the chicken bus, as we call it, and were off to work construction and help with the Abuelitas. I got to work with the Abuelitas for the morning. I was very excited to see some faces I recognized from last year and to see that they added some new Abuelitas and three Abuelitos! Cameron and Meghan started playing guitar and singing American songs as the team went around and hugged them. Those hugs were so heartfelt and full of pure joy and they didn’t even know us! It was very emotional.

We then proceeded to dance with them and there were smiles everywhere. All of these older ladies and gentlemen were so happy that we were jumping around and dancing with them. And we were so thankful for it because it made us happy.

After the dancing, Mrs. Susan started us on our craft–painting a canvas with a cross on it. They LOVED it! The Abuelitas went to town on those canvases and were so excited when we showed them the finished product. I helped one lady, Juana, and she teared up a little bit and she hugged me and thanked me. Then the Abuelitas started to color and I could tell they were so proud of their coloring because I would bring out my camera and all of them wanted a picture with their drawings.

After Abuelitas was over, my group went to help the other group doing construction. Our job was to fill in a huge hole with cement. It was amazing to see how a group of teenagers (and adults) who may not enjoy physical labor all that much worked together to get stuff done!

Following construction, our team went to help with VBS at the Wesleyan Church down the street.  The other team stayed and worked with the kids at Happy Tummies! At VBS, I saw some faces that I met there last year!

For our craft, the kids colored a little wheel that showed the story of creation. The cool part for me was that I was able to communicate with the kids with the limited knowledge of Spanish I have. I also loved watching them share and show their parents their drawings.

I remember seeing one little boy, probably no older than 5, walk out of our building and up the street. I wanted to run after the little boy, as we would do in the United States, but Tony came around and said that he lived right by the church and that it was normal for him to walk by himself. I was freaked out because right then and there I saw how much of a cultural difference there was between here and home.

Overall, all of us have had so much fun with the children. They especially love bubbles being blown at them and trying to pop or eat them! It was a fantabulous day and I can’t wait until we get to go back again tomorrow!!!
