Day three – Abuelitos & Ninos!

Categories: High School,Students

Today’s post is written by Hope Coker

We had another early morning today! We had to leave at 6:30am to go to the Happy Tummies site in San Juan to eat breakfast. Pastor Luis gave a great devotion talking about the first commandment–how you should not worship idols.

Shortly after, the abuelitos started showing up and we were immediately greeted with hugs and kisses which lasted for a while considering that every single abuelito needed to hug and kiss all 16 of us!

While they were doing their activities, Katie Ring, Abby Uzzell, Carol (a new friend from another church), and I went on home visits. We visited a single mom with two girls, and a family with four kids. The single mom, Ohenia, specifically asked us to pray for God to give her peace. She has struggled with depression and has had anxiety with raising her girls alone in an unsafe environment. (side note: would you pray for her today?)

When we got back to Happy Tummies the abuelitos were leaving so we said our long goodbyes with another round of hugs and kisses. In the time we had between the abuelitos and the niños, I got the chance to color princesses with one of the worker’s daughters, Belendi. It was the first time I felt like I had a good Spanish conversation with someone. We talked about the princesses, colors, and every once in a while she would ask me how to say certain things in English.

Once all the niños came in from after school they ate and then began coloring as we hid make-shift paper easter eggs around the property. They had a blast trying to find them. Some of them climbed up the swing poles like monkeys while others tackled Kyle for the eggs. We tied in the lost eggs being found to the parables Jesus tells in Luke 15 about the celebration that comes when lost things/people are found. But beyond the egg hunt, my favorite part of the day was the dance party. Dancing was a way for us to bond without speaking. I will never forget the moment one of the boys started body rolling. Of course, he won the dance contest!

Overall, we had a very productive day filled with lots of laughter, and we can’t wait to do it all again tomorrow!

    Hello from the Morgenroth family.
We just wanted to let you know that we are praying for you all, ( and a little jealous of you right now☺️). The smiles tell it all. Have an amazing week. Oh, by the way, we all brought our Guatemalan blankets with us on vacation this week. So I highly recommend not leaving the Promise Land without one.

A productive day indeed. It’s wonderful to read of joy and FUN being shared. I’m thankful for this great HMUMC team and the loving people who have welcomed you. May God bless you all. We say it all the time, but somehow I continue to be amazed: Christ’s people are one in His Spirit. Period. Keep up the good play.

Hello from Dacula! Hope- LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the post from today. You have such an amazing heart for others and it is definitely shining through!!!

My sweet Abuelitos!! I miss them SO much! Anna- the picture of you with Ana is Beautiful!!! Y’all girls all watch out for my favorite Handsy Abuelito!!! He is quick!

The Easter egg hunt idea was a great one and I can just imagine the kids… racing around. Good thinking!!

Pastor Luis… it sounds like your messages have been on point. I sure do miss you. Send some of your wisdom back to me via Carlos. I often think back to our conversations last year. God placed you right there exactly when I needed to talk with you about our food pantry and you gave me courage to put all my trust in Him… just as you did. That God of ours is pretty darn smart!

Team, as you get to this tired part of the week, push through. It goes by way too quickly. I’m proud of each of you for stepping up to this challenge. God bless each one of you!

    With gratitude,
    Susan Lang

P.S. I got back from San Fran and found both Mr Matt and Gracie in the fetal position. Gracie was missing her best twin friends. And Mr Matt was mumbling something about Kyle?!? Weird.

  14. Flea bag Lang Posted on April 4, 2017 at 9:29 pm

Well just a lil update on life here at the Lang’s during spring break. I read Susan’s post about Gracie and I in the fetal position… We’ll part of that is true. Gracie and I have learned we have been infested with racoon fleas! YES… the racoon family is back again vacationing at our house for spring break. I guess they enjoy getting out of the city to the burbs for a break. SO… Gracie and I spent the afternoon sharing a flea bath and putting on our matching flea collars ! Well, the racoon family is doing well. The kids are now freshman in rodent high school and the haven’t learned to wash, groom, and wear deodorant! Can you imagine the fleas and the smells? Mom and dad raccoon are well but still fighting over the squirrel family that lives next door. Of course I decided again to leave the laundry from our family and the raccoon’s until Susan returned from San Fran. OH IT’S BAD! Well enough for now! Have fun and enjoy knowing it could be worse…
