Weekly Top Ten – July 26

This Week’s Top Ten!

1. Merry Christmas!

This Sunday, July 30th in Worship
Services: Word & Table Service @ 8am  |  Modern Service @ 9:15am  |  Traditional Service @ 11:00am
No, we won’t sing “Silent Night” and light candles, but we WILL celebrate the “good news of great joy for all the people.”  Jesus is Emmanuel, “God with us,” and his birth is the shattering of all barriers between us and God.  The message of Christmas is the foundation of the Gospel.  Why should we celebrate that good news only once a year?  So this Sunday we will join with the Hallmark Channel and various car dealerships and retailers in celebrating Christmas in July.   The weather outside might be frightful, but the AC is so delightful.  Let’s gather in joy.  The babe of Bethlehem is always the hope of the world.

2. Blessing of the Backpacks

Blessing of the Backpacks
Sunday, Aug 6 in all services
Join us for the 3rd annual “Blessing of the Backpacks!” We will pray a special blessing over students (and their backpacks), asking God to guide, protect, and nurture them this year. This is a Family Worship Sunday, so students of ALL ages are invited to join us for services in the Worship Center – and BRING THEIR BACKPACKS!
In addition to our students, we will also take the opportunity to recognize, thank, and pray for all who are involved in the education of our students: teachers, administrators, bus drivers, and all school workers. They will also be prayed over during service and invited to a special Thank You Reception in “The Rooftop” after service.
Be sure to invite a friend, neighbor, or teacher to join you for worship on August 6 at 8am, 9:15am or 11am.

3. Kickoff Cookout

Kickoff Cookout
Sunday, August 13
4pm-5pm – Dinner and Entertainment in the Worship Center
5pm-6pm – Get Connected & Have Fun!
It’s time to kickoff the Fall season with a church cookout. This family event will start with dinner and entertainment in the Worship Center followed by indoor and outdoor fun for all ages. It’s all about connecting as a church family and discovering how we can serve as the hands and feet of Christ through worshiping, serving and growing together.

4. Upcoming Women’s Event

A Women’s Day Together
Saturday, August 19  9:30am-1:30pm
How does a relaxing day of “Soul Tending” sound?
In our busy lives, it’s hard to be still and connect with God. Using prayer beads can enhance our prayer lives by helping us be still, focus our prayers, and listen to God. Please join us for a relaxing and fun day with friends, as together we learn more about how making prayer beads can strengthen our prayer habits. The cost of the event is $20, which includes event fees, prayer bead materials, and lunch. Please use the link below to sign up before Aug 15th.

5. New Growth Groups Starting Soon!

Wednesdays 6:30pm – 7:45pm
Aug 16 – Sept 13
Led by Mark Westmoreland
No cost | Childcare Available
The Book of Jonah is one of a kind. It’s called a book of prophecy, but the only sermon offered is one line long. It’s the story of a prophet, but this prophet wants nothing to do with the job. It’s about a well-placed big fish, and it’s about some really bad people who are loved by God. But, mostly, it’s about the God who loves those bad people, who calls that reluctant prophet, who is the Lord of all creation and cares about the fish (large and small), the cattle in the field, and everything else. And it all ends with a question.
Wednesdays 6:30pm – 7:45pm
Aug 16 – Sept 20
Led by Daphne Hyatt, Jan Watkins and Tracy Goodbar
Cost: $6 | Childcare Available
Our lives are like lumps of clay on a potter’s wheel. Form, function, and beauty appear as God, the Potter, shapes us with his hands. He is in the business of molding our common lives – even the ugly parts – into something wonderful! In this study of Colossians, you will discover how to place your lives in the secure hands of God and allow him to do what he does best.
Wednesdays 6:30pm – 7:45pm
Aug 16 – Sept 20
Led by Suzanne Holman
Cost $10 | Childcare Available

We have all been shaped by our relationships. They impact the decisions we make, the places we go, and the things we do. That’s why it’s so important for parents to develop strong relationships with their children. As a parent, you have the opportunity and the responsibility to guide your child’s relationship with God and with others. While culture offers many suggestions about parenting, this 6-session study looks at what God has to say about navigating the road ahead of you.
Mondays 10am – 11:30am
Aug 21 – Dec 4
Led by Harry & Beverly Neville
Cost: $12
Mark, the shortest gospel, is sometimes underrated. Nevertheless, it is a monumental piece of historical and theological reflection on the most influential person ever to walk the face of the Earth. Reading and studying this Gospel will give you a transformative understanding and experience of walking with Jesus in power, immediacy, and discipleship.
Wednesdays 9:30am – 10:45am
Sept 6 – Oct 11
Led by Jennie Jackson & Shelby Harper
Cost: $8 | Childcare upon request
Join a great group of ladies on a journey from frantic pushing and proving, towards essential self. We’ll have fun getting to know each other as we reflect on Shauna Niequist’s book Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living.
Sundays 5pm – 7pm
Aug 20 – April 29
Led by David Watkins
Cost $35 | Childcare upon request

This in-depth study of two foundational books in the Old Testament (Genesis & Exodus) and two in the New Testament (Luke and Acts), emphasizes the rhythm of coming to God and going for God, of being in the Word and in the world individually and corporately. The importance of keeping Bible study related to witness is reinforced while participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives.
Wednesdays 6:30pm – 7:45pm

Student Bible Study
Join us for our last meeting
TOMORROW, Thursday, 27 from 8am to 9:30am
at Chick-fil-A Hamilton Mill
Join your friends at Chick-fil-A as we grow deeper in our understanding of God’s word this summer. This Bible study is for all students rising 6th-12th grade. Students will need to be picked up and dropped off at CFA, Hamilton Mill and will also need to bring money for breakfast if they would like to eat. Come just once or all month long.
We’re going to be studying the Bible and asking tough questions. Can I Ask That? Sure, why not? We will be looking at a number of difficult questions about faith and religion. Some of the questions we will be talking about are “Is the Bible real?” and “Does the Bible Contradict Itself?” We will be using a curriculum called “Can I Ask That,” written by Kara Powell, the Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute, Jim Candy, and Brad Griffin. We will be tackling these tough questions together and enjoying some amazing CFA at the same time! Join us on Thursdays and bring a friend!

Donations may be dropped off at Hamilton Mill UMC from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Thursday or on Sunday mornings before and after worship services at 8am, 9:15am and 11am. You may also make a monetary donation online by clicking here.
While we are focusing on PB & J during the month of July, please remember that we would love additional food donations as well. Our most needed items include: canned fruit, cereal, pasta, canned meats and soups with meats.
Thank you for your support! Together we can make a difference!
Learn more about The Pantry and how you can volunteer on Saturday mornings at www.hmumc.org/thepantry.
American Flag Retirement Project
HMUMC’s Military Support Group and our Scouts are working together on a flag retirement project. During the month of July, please bring in your worn American flags and place them in the collection bins located through the double doors to the right of the Worship Center’s Welcome Desk. Please add a note with the flag giving information as to where it was flown, how long flown, any special events at the site where the flag was flown. The cub scouts will cut out the stars that are embroidered on the flags; then the flags will be retired by the scouts in accordance with American flag rules. The collected stars will then be given out close to Veteran’s Day.
